Menya Miyabi Hokkaido Ramen at Queensbay Mall, Penang

Aloha people!

Yes, we are both still alive and very well thank you :)

There has been so much happening around us (2 months of no update from us we are so sorrryyyy!) and one of the big thing is WE'RE ENGAGED! We will share that next time when we have more time to collate the photos and share the happiness with you guys!

So, thank you for those who knew that our foodblog is pretty much dead (for a time) but still visits them everyday. Thank you so much! :)

Even if don't have such readers, its okay we will still think there is because everyday our number is just there so yeah. THANK YOU! :)

For a few months already that she was craving for a good ramen and well, we have been searching to find good ones in Penang and this was one of the place that was recommended by you guys, so let's see how it went.

Good or no good we shall see.

Menya Miyabi Hokkaido Ramen, sounds good alright.

Internal homey feel.

Gyoza (fried dumplings) - RM12 for 6 pieces
He says: Not a big fan of this but its pretty good! Served hot and i like the crispiness outside.
She says: Everytime we eat somewhere, sure got at least one side dish. THIS SO TRUE MAN! Hah. Anyways, this was served hot and that's why I feel it was pretty good. If cold, sure not nice. Not a bad dish.

Piri Kara Tantan Men (hot & spicy Ramen with spicy minced pork) - RM24
He says: Its not that spicy but still good! The taste is really different from other places.
She says: Very good first impression! The soup was not as spicy as I would like it to be. The noodles, springy and soft love it. Broth tastes authentic.

Yaki-Miso Ramen (fried soybean paste flavour) - RM23.50
He says: I love it. Became a ramen fan after leaving this place.
She says: It was pretty salty so they added more prok broth inyo it instead of plain hot water so that's a bonus point. So authentic lah this place. I didn't quite like this ramen? It's unfair for me to say that it's a bad ramen as I've tasted the real good ones in Osaka, but I didn't manage to finish it. I think its mostly because my expectation was really high due to people's recommendation. Bleh. So yeah, go try it. You might like it.

Senya Izakaya Restaurant at Publika Shopping Gallery at Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

Short quick holiday to Kuala Lumpur just because we can! :)

Found this Japanese restaurant at Publika while searching for places to eat with his family :)

We have two special guests with us today for this amazing makan session. It was a Japanese style of birthday celebration for the drop-dead-gorgeous lady on the right :)

The color and lighting of the restaurant attracts people from a distance. Extra point for that!

Hardworking chefs at work.

Udon - RM12.80

He says: Hmmm... Nothing special but the soup is pretty good.
She says: Udon very soft. Soup quite normal kind of Japanese udon soup. Heh.
Joe says: I'm still here trying to recall how it tasted and I can't recall. I supposed that says it all.
Jaryn says: I like this one! The soup is fragrant and the udon's texture is just the way I like them to be!

Hokkaido Pork Don - RM22

He says: THIS IS DA ONE. 2 thumbs and 2 toes up!
She says: Grilled to perfection wei! Soft and juicy. One of the best grilled pork belly. THUMBS UP!
Joe says: I would go back there just for this dish. Absolutely delicious.
Jaryn says: This has got to be the star dish of this restaurant. I love it so much!! Oily and unhealthy but oh-so-yummy!

Pork Cutlet Curry  - RM25

He says: Not a big fan of Japanese curry. Like usual, tastes a powderish..
She says: Love the curry. It's not those kin dof spicy curry. It has that amazing aroma and taste that makes the curry so delicious even when it's not spicy. Love it!
Joe says: Tasted exactly like how it should be; which is not too special.
Jaryn says: Never been a big fan of Japanese curry so naturally, this one is not my favorite. The portion is quite big though, so I supposed if you like Japanese curry it's worth trying.

California Roll - RM14.80
He says: Like it!
She says: Okaylah.
Joe says: Good!
Jaryn says: They aren't too bad at all! But they aren't the best I've had. For something so common I think it takes a lot more to really stand out. At least for me!

Canggih punya system ni.

Yame Green Tea Ice Cream Wafer at Shojikiya, Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang

We recently saw a friend's Instagram photo of a green tea ice cream wafer and my gosh, it looks so good! We found out that we could get our handson this goodness at Shojikiya (The Japanese Food Specialty Store) and Gurney Paragon mall happens to have Shojikiya!

We don't go to the Gurney Paragon Mall that often and when we finally did step inside the mall, that was the first place that she wanted to go to look for the ice cream.

We walked in and immediately went to the freezer and eyes started searching. He searched around and saw this one but mentioned that it costs around RM16! So, we almost just wanna drop the idea of tasting it until a lady who works there, came and pointed at a corner, that buy any of 2 ice cream products and it's only RM11!

So, we asked if this green tea ice cream wafer is also having the promotion. She said no and we were like whispering to ourselves that it's actually too expensive to spend RM16 for an ice cream wafer. Seriously, the most expensive ice cream (don't mention Haagen Daaz or Baskin Robbins) is RM9.80! You can read about it here!

Anyways, she heard us and immediately said, "Oh no no. This one *points to the one we wanted* is only RM6.90!

Straight happy!

It's quite a huge wafer with green tea ice cream inside. ONLY RM6.90!
He says: Hahaha. Better than I expected it to be! The green tea ice cream is just right, neither too sweet nor bitter. Just nice. Would go back for that!
She says: LOVE THIS DESSERT! The green tea ice cream has that authentic green tea taste and not like flavoring kind. It's not that sweet. It actually has some bitter taste to it, which makes me love it even more. One more thing I really love about this green tea ice cream wafer is I won't have like 2-second-toothache on my front teeth when I bite the ice cream. First layer is the wafer ma of course lah right? And the wafer is not that thick, ice cream is fully packed in there. OH YUMS TO THE MAX! Love this so much I wanna stock this at home!

Sushi Zanmai Restaurant at Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang

We have been hearing all the buzz here and there about Sushi Zanmai and we decided that one of the date night we were gonna eat there.

What better night to go there for dinner than on a Friday night right?

Many people also warned us before that if you go on Friday and the weekends, especially dinner time, there will be a long queue right in front of the place, but we didn't really care. We, risk-takers. Hahaha. So we walked towards the restaurant after saying a fast and short prayer because we obviously don't want to beratur.

Saw the restaurant from a distance and no line! HOOORAYY! We got there, and waited like less than 5 minutes for them to clear the table and then we got our place. And dinner begins :)

Tamago Mentai (Omelette roasted with cod roe) - RM2.80
He says: Would recommend this one to you!
She says: When he took this sushi, I was like, "You came here to eat omelette on rice?" but then after I took one bite, I took another plate of this. SO YUMMY! Must be because of the cod roe. SO SO YUMMY!

We-forgot-the-name-of-this-sushi - RM1.80
He says: Erm.. typical sushi?
She says: Normal le.

Inari (Sweet beancurd) - RM1.80
He says: Love it.. the tofu pouches were sweet and tasty.
She says: No thanks for me. So weird to be eating the skin of tofu. HAHA.

Stir-fried vegetables (Teppanyaki style)
He says: Nah.. not so good.. Could taste much better..
She says: Worse stir-fry veg ever. Even I can do better than that.

Chicken Katsudon (Chicken cutlet simmered with egg on rice) - RM8.80 (small)

He says: Erm.. Not as good as I expected it to be but it was okay :)
She says: It says small in the menu but the real size was pretty huge. Rice was soft, chicken was crunchy and hot, but not much flavour to it. Not so nice overall.

Unatama Don (Roasted eel simmered with egg on rice) - RM18.80 (small)
He says: Definitely much better than the chicken katsudon for me. Try this!
She says: This one has more flavour than the chicken one. Maybe it's because of the unagi sauce, the sweet sauce. But also okay only la. Nothing to shout about really.

Oh Sushi Restaurant at Straits Quay, Penang

This post was actually ready to be posted a while ago already, but when she opened it to do some editing, she accidentally DELETED the entire post and blogger automatically saved it. So, now we had to do it all over again! So the very downs..

Anyways, here it goes again.

A relative of hers went to Oh Sushi Restaurant once to try this particular dish, and even commented that it's quite good. So, as the birthday of the boy arrives, we decided that we would go to this restaurant at Straits Quay for a nice dinner.

We actually already had planned what we ere gonna order. We sat down and looked through the menu to see if it might change our mind. But it didn't. Not because there were not much choices. In fact, they have TOO MANY items to choose! Haha. But we only wanted to order the Salmon Fosh Head Steamboat. And it wasn't in the menu. So we asked and this dish is actually a "special" one that is not written in the menu. you can see the standing banner on the outside of the restaurant. So yeah, we ordered that. It's around RM78 for two persons.

We thought that the preparation of the meal would take some time so we ended up ordering our alltime favorite salad. Manatau, both came at the same time. Haha.

Let's see what we think of  it.

You can sit outside too if you want but us, no thanks to feeding the blood-suckers :)

Nuts for appetizer - FREE OF CHARGE.
He says: Typical nuts.
She says: Just normal nuts. I thought the green ones are wasabi flavored since it's a Japanese Restaurant ma. But no.

Soft Shell Crab and Salmon Skin Salad - RM17
He says: 2 thumbs up! I think this one is quite good! The sauce is the 'star' of the dish though. Salmon skin could have been more crispy though.. Try this!
She says: I feel the greenies given was a lil too small. Salmon skin was disappointing. Soft shell crab was yummy. The sauce is goood. I have tasted better ones at Edoichi Restaurant, with bigger portion somemore.

Salmon Fish Head Steamboat

You get to choose a serving of either ramen or udon. In our case, definitely ramen!
He says: That small bit is super a lot after being cooked! Like it.
She says: THIS IS LIKE SO BEST. They take quite a long time to be cooked in our steamboat pot but it's so worth the wait. Love the noodles and textures. So smooth and yummy.

Fried Salmon Head (CAN REFILL AS MANY TIME AS YOU WANT!) Also, we tried the fresh ones but we forgot to take photos. Haha.
He says: Salmon! hahaha. Like fried chicken, how bad could fried chicken be? =D
She says: Naturally, salmon fish head already has a kind of smell/taste that not many people can stand. So by deep frying its head and put it in steamboat, it's actually very yummy. Some parts are crunchy and other parts have quite a lot of meat. We refilled this fried fish head for like 3-4 times. Good stuff :)

He says: This is the BOMB! I would come back here just for this pot of soup!
She says: All the goodness in a pot. When it comes, it comes with all the vegetables and different kind of mushrooms in it. SO, if you're a vege lover like me, you'll love this one! The soup. THE SOUP IS FINGER/SPOON LICKING GOOOOD! Love how sweet and spicy it is at the same time. I have never tasted this kind of soup base before. It's just too yummy. I can just feast on the soup and vege and ramen and I'm a happy girl already! The soup is seriously all thumbs up! :)
