Ban Chang Koay Opposite Methodist Boy School, Penang

And also to add in our list of all-time favorite snack, bang chang koay or you can call it 'pancake' Penang style. It is believed to be a Chinese Malaysian dessert, also literally means 'million heated cake.'

For this case, it's Malay style ban chang koay :)

and yes, we googled all that infos.. Everybody loves Google! :)

One evening after work, the girl craved for ban chang koay. Being a good boyfriend, he brainstormed and almost immediately thought of a place (actually, he also want to eat as badly as the girl but the girl said it out first, heh!) She has never eaten this one before as this is the Malay style of ban chang koay, and she usually prefers the chinese ones. But he reassures her ten thousand million times that this one is really different and good. Cannot blame her as she have had many bad experiences with Malay's style ban chang koay. Wahaha.

Most of you will be able to recognize the place once you see the background..

The big and thick ones also ada jual, but we didn't get that one. We bought four pieces of normal ones. 2 for each (I know, we are such critical ban chang koay lovers that we refused to share!) Muahaha.

Ban Chang Koay (Malay style) - sixty cents only!
He says: My favourite snack! hahaha! If any BCK shop appears in front of me, I'll buy one! =)
This shops sells the best Malay BCK that I've tried. 60 cents only plus jagung some more unlike Chinese'! Value for money and puas hati =D Want more Malay BCKs? Go to:
1) Batu Lanchang (Beside Cameron Highlands Kopitiam)
2)Terengganu Road (Beside the bus stand opposite the Eden bakery)
3) City Stadium (Along Perak Road)
4) Lorong Kulit!

She says: My expectation for this one was so-so as sometimes he can be very convincing about how nice the food is but when I eat it, it's like "errrr..". You know what I mean la. So, I didn't want to expect much from this one. However, the moment I took the first bite, wow. Super crispy! Not only that okay, it's like not too thick and not too thin in the middle of it. You know some ban chang koay can be so hard to eat cos they are too thick and also if too thin, you don't eat much! So, I would say this one is just right! Perfecto! and it's soooo cheap! Got jagung inside sumore! :) He was right, in the end :)

Raja Uda Tomyam at Asia Cafe, Air Itam, Penang.

Tomyam related post again! I don't know if you are beginning to realize that we eat tomyam a lot. or thai related food a lot. I mean like, if we look back, there's a lot of thai/tomyam posts! HAHAHA.

oh well.

Some time ago, a friend mentioned that there is a Raja Uda's Tomyam shop in Penang. In Asia Cafe. So, we found a perfect night to try it out! And what better time to go when all our friends suddenly 'ppk-ed' us on the night we were craving for tomyam and wanted to go to Heng Heng's! (which you can also see our review here!) :)

Same thing in Raja Uda, they have lots and lots of items to choose to go inside the amazing spicy soup, ranging from seafood to non-seafood. They even have razor shells, a type of shellfish.

 the back of the 'kitchen'

 Tomyam maggi
(1 Taiwan sausage, 10 pieces of meatballs, 6 strips of abalone)
RM6.50
He says: Sweet type of tomyam like the original one from Raja Uda. Okok la.. The only bad thing is that it is a bit oily. Anyhow, it is a lot cheaper compared to the one from original one from Raja Uda!
She says: I usually don't prefer maggi mee simply cos then the soup will have that maggi mee taste.

 Tomyam Porridge
(5 strips of abalone, 7 pieces of deep fried fish fillets, minced meat)
RM6.50
He says: This is more like a sticky ball porridge. Haha. Sweeet and sour enough =) Prefer tomyam maggie!
She says: Like this one better. The soup actually tasted quite nice, but a different kind. It's more to a sweet and a bit of spicy sour type. To say I love it, not really but to say I hate it, also not really. So, I'm a lot of somewhere in the middle for this one. LOVE the abalone though! and the fried fish, nicely fried and doesn't smell funny :) Will I visit this shop again? Certainly yes.

Lang Sae Lee Thai Food Restaurant at Tan Jetty, Weld Quay, Penang

We consider ourselves pretty hardcore fans when we talk about Thai food! It's like 'sure win and sure eat' if we ever utter those words! You just need ONE person to say it, and confirm we will go eat! CONFIRM!

Ooh la la!

jalan-jalan cari makan...

to the right, to the right!

more places to sit as you you further inside..

Spot the mini red house at the end of the jambatan?

It's the 'natural' toilet! So, while waiting for the food to come, we put on our explorer hats and check out out the toilets. Very the supernatural toilet indeed.

You must be wondering why we call it that. You see, normally when we go into a toilet, es expect to see either a toilet bowl or a squat kind of toilet, right? But this one, its slumdog millionaire in Penang! Suddenly, she got so disgusted and like, curious at the same time. He ummm... just smiled the whole entire time?

So ya, that means any kind of output that people release goes right into the ocean, and anything that's down below. Ugh! and it was low tide sumore. Imagine when it's high tide and people will be eating and enjoying their 'sea-view'! Oh the horror after we found out!

We went with our two friends, and they too will be commenting from their part! :)

Special guest 1: Mr. Moy Wei Sern, the whiz of food!

Special guest 2: Mr. Chiam Ter Min, the handsome man.

Deep Fried Kangkung and Enoki Mushroom

He says: I kinda like this! Probably because most food which are deep fried tastes good! hahaha. Tips: Dip this into the Thai chili sauce, it'll taste even better. I would opt for the mushrooms over the kangkung though.

She says: I don't really like this. Not much taste eh.

Moy says: "Good stuff!" Typical Thai restaurants will serve deep fried kangkung, but this restaurant has deep fried enoki as well. A good addition and also very considerate by the owner as they allow you to mix both deep fried kangkung and enoki as one single dish so you get the best of both. A must try whenever visiting a Thai restaurant and with the addition of deep fried enoki for this case, it's not to be missed.

Term says: Pretty good starter dish. The fact that this dish came earlier than the others was probably so that we can eat it while waiting for the other dishes. A lil more salt and pepper will be better to enhance the taste.

Tomyam Seafood

He says: Takda 'uhhhmmmmmm'! The length of the time we waited for this tomyam, I would expect this to be at least good. But, it's not. Downnnn..

She says: Ok ok with the soup. Spicy enough and sour enough, but really nothing to shout about.

Moy says: A typical must-order dish at a Thai restaurant. I must say that it wasn't the best I've tasted. I guess the food quality has decreased since my first visit in 2010 when they first opened and it was way better that time. There weren't much of flavors and ingredients in the soup but it is still spicy and does have the tomyam taste. Just that its not a very exceptional one. Still, its always a typical must-order dish at a Thai restaurant but just one note, that is the portion is quite small.
Term says: Thai food specialty and must call dish. I think it wasn't as good as I thought it would be.. not enough 'kick'.. Needs more flavour and ingredients in the soup.. And too little meat for the price we paid for..

Otak-Otak

He says: Hmmmm... Just an 'okok' dish for me. Smells great with the rich flavored fragrance of the coconut milk. Nevertheless, unlike most Malaysian's otak-otak, this Thai's otak-otak is wrapped in an aluminium foil. Don't be deceived by the picture above, the portion of this dish is quite small as the middle part of this dish is hollow to occupy the fire to heat up the otak-otak as long as possible.

She says: No doubt my favourite dish that night! Doesn't look very appetizing but it's super yummy. The coconut milk that is used really enhances the taste alongside with the seafood that's in it.

Moy says: This was probably my favourite dish among all dishes. It has good variety of ingredients, taste and flavors. Crab and prawn meat are also added in which it is usually made traditionally just with fish meat. I love the balance of the coconut milk as it's not too much but just at the right amount. Wrapped and boiled in an aluminium foil, the fragrant is amazing  when first opened. This is a must try!

Term says: Gotta be the best dish for me on that night.. Rich in flavor and taste.. However, too small for a portion.. More meat too perhaps?

Tang Hoon Prawn

He says: Smells weird like seriously.. Yucks.. Disappointing!

She says: *shakes head* Next please! haha

Moy says: I've tried this once when they first opened in early 2010 and it was really something special that time. Sadly, upon visiting this time, it didn't live up to my expectation. There's a very strong bad smell with the dish which makes it unpleasant to eat. The portion of remainder for that dish speaks for itself.

Term says: I think this was pretty good dish.. Something out of the ordinary and I assumed its kinda like their specialty.. The prawns in that dish was prett fresh.. However, maybe a lil too much spices?

The Bill

He says: Ex to the pen to the sive! i went there once long time ago and I told myself I will not go back there but somehow I ended back there again! This time, I would say the same to myself. The only plus point here is the environment (sea-view or sometimes mud-view).

She says: I honestly like the whole surroundings of how we look into the 'ocean' and how romantic-ish it can make one feels. BUT IT IS CRAZY in terms of the price and how normal the Thai food actually taste like and the toilet! Yes, that actually makes me not like the place. Imagine when the tide is high, all the human's output will be seen floating la! Eeeee.. For me, I will not go back there! Thank you :)

Moy says: A pretty good environment and it's a place that not many can find in Penang. With the view of the beautiful sunset in Penang and the surroundings of the wooden house along the jetty, it's truly a different experience compared to any other Thai restaurants. The environment itself feels like we're just having a simple dish at home and its back to basics. So if you're up for something simple, check out this place. It's not the best place for a romantic date but it's a place for an enjoyable and relaxing evening with some Thai food accompanied with friends. Just one note, the prices are a little bit expensive considering the small portions of the dishes. However, give it a try and you have your say! :)

Term says: Environment was good.. Something different from other places facing the sea.. Sadly, the tide was too low (don't know if the water will actually reach the shore on other days though).. But watching the evening turn into night while eating your meal is surely a pleasant sight!

Fatty Boy Chicken Rice Restaurant 98 at Burmah Road, Penang

ANOTHER ALL-TIME FAVORITE!

You have no idea how often we eat chicken rice! Not like always la, but still very often! It's like we just have some sort of attraction towards this kind of food! Fattening much? haha.

We uses this main road so often that almost everytime we drive pass it, she would mention about this place cos it seems like during lunch time, it's usually packed with hungry people. Just a very small corner shop along the main road but the crowd really is the thing that led us to the makan this time.

The flavored rice
He says: Hmm... Okay lahh, normal? =)
She says: Quite nice.

He says: Love this one. Sour and sweet =)
She says: Not spicy enough but like the taste of it.

He says: Yup yup.. Like this one.. Got the smell of the freshly roasted chicken =)
She says: I like the sauce of the chicken. Almost like any normal chicken from any chicken rice stall.

He says: Ok la.. Not a big fan of this soup but... is definitely better than other chicken rice shops that sells this soup!
She says: Everytime I eat chicken rice, this is a must-have!  but this one is just so.. err.. not nice at all! Too strong of ginger taste inside and spoils the whole thing. I hated it so much that I didn't take more than 5 spoonful. *geli*

He says: Tau eu nui! How does hard boiled eggs tastes like?
She says: Biasa saja le.

He says: Like all boiled taugehs, this one tastes good! Just put some tau eu, pepper and garlic!
She says: It's not raw or semi-raw! Usually it's always like semi-raw and its super disgusting to eat but this one is like perfectly cooked, I would say :)

Bountiful Kitchen Restaurant at Jones Road, Penang

So, the family heard about this new place that serves set lunch and off we went to try it out. I tell you, the two authors of this blog are gonna gain so much weight that no one will be able to recognize us anymore, if we don't exercise! HAHA. The pros and cons of being a food blogger huh. But so far, we are loving it! :)

Set lunch.

Interior of the restaurant is quite modern looking and nice.

Drinks (honey green tea or iced lemon tea)
He says: Just like any normal honey green tea.
She says: This one quite nice :) hooray to honey green tea!

Soup of the day
He says: I can't even remember the name of this soup! Green pea soup? Looks green but tastes empty. Nevertheless, the soup compliments the bread really well. =)
She says: Pretty tasteless to me. Didn't finish it. and I am usually someone who finish my soup!

Cumin Chicken (Signature Dish)
He says: The one is quite good. The chicken is a boneless one with cumin sauce poured over it. Also, it comes together with vegetables and mashed potato.
She says: Not bad.

Kapitan Fish
He says: YUMMY. The gravy is really good. It comes with garden vegetables and briyani rice. The briyani rice is not aromoatic enough though..
She says: Like the nasi briyani and the spicy gravy on top.

Spaghetti Fish Masala
He says: This is something new! It is some kind of western and indian fusion thing! Spaghetti and curry together. Quite a nice combination though.. 0.0
She says: Pretty weird combination. Curry and spaghetti? Hmm.. Me no likey..

Orange Lemon Fish
He says: Tastes really weird. Orange+Lemon? Decide either one man!
She says: This is not nice. And it's not filling at all.

Dessert
He says: Hahaha.this one remind me of the rainbow Paddlepop ice cream i love last time. Ok la. Didn't try that at the end. "Too full"
She says: In my most honest opinion, this has got to be the most disgusting ice cream I have ever put into my mouth. YUCK!

And then, we ordered ala carte too. This one is called dragon silk (RM7.90)
He says: Wah good ah! I like.. Try this one peeps! =D
She says: I kinda like this one. Its more like fried crispy fish paste but it's nice, esp with the Thai chilli sauce.
