Nasi Beratur at Kapitan Keling, Penang

Midnight makan always somehow happens around mamak or nasi kandar. I have no idea why. I mean, sure there are people who will eat at Green House or some other coffeeshops that open till the wee hours. But in the end, Penang people will still settle for nasi kandar or roti canai. SOMEHOW!

And this time, she wasn't gonna just go to any mamak/nasi kandar place to eat. She had already planned one day earlier to go for the ever-famous nasi beratur since she will be out till so late d. For him, he had already gone there like so many times since he's such a night person.

That's 79 years of business yo!

The extended under canopy area. Pretty cool.

How Nasi Beratur got its name.

The many varieties of curry and dish for you to choose. If you're a clean freak, don't think you'll feel comfortable eating here.

Our main course.
He says: The chicken meat in the picture above is super hard. So, grandparents, you better stay away from that. Haha! But this place serves really good nasi kandar. The 'kuah'/gravy is simply awesome.  Even the rats and cockroaches risk their lives to get a bite of it. =p I recommend you people to try the beef meat, and the ayam ros. Also, some say that the squid eggs is a must!
She says: Fried chicken is definitely not the best. But the gravy is powerr! I never actually expect that the curry would be so nice. I mean, that kinda explains why there are so many people in the midnight onwards and people actually will BERATUR for it. But partly also cos the man who serves is freaking slow. He takes like forever to scoop the rice onto the plate. Haha. I will definitely go back there again and again. Go Nasi Beratur!!

Battle of TWO Wan Tan Mee Stalls in Penang.

We never really would regard ourselves as Wan Tan Mee lovers. Not that we hate it or dislike it but I think we never really go crazy over this hawker food. Not till recently.

This post is specially created like that because we went to two different place in the span of few days. Both also we ate in the midnight, I think. So, here it goes. Our Wan Tan Mee story.

First place we went: Wan Tan Mee at Chulia Street, Penang

Mr Tam Chiak making his order.

It was drizzling that night, hence the lady's fashionable 'pink hat' :)

Wan Tan Mee (used to be called 'Tok Tok Mee in the olden days) - RM2.80
He says: Quite different from other wan tan mees. The noodle is just right! However, the lady gave me a unpleasant look when I ordered the food. Boo sama lu! Bad service..
She says: I wasn't that hungry the night we ate this. So, that's why we only ordered one plate of it. I could smell it even before the pinkhatlady puts it down onto our table. The noodles, not too hard and not too soft. I think what makes this wan tan mee taste so good (and apparently famous too) is the black sauce/gravy that makes or breaks the whole dish. In conclusion ah, I LOVE THIS ONE! :)

Wan Tan Soup - RM3.00 (9 pieces of mini wantons)
He says: Normal la..
She says: I like the wantons. Very soft and meaty and juicy. Soup, is pretty okay. Nothing extraordinary le.

Second place we went: Maria's Wan Tan Mee at Burmah Road

Grumpy aunty is grumpy heh.

Wan Tan Mee (thin/fat noodles) - RM3.00
He says: I like this one! The noodles are soft and the gravy is just nice. =) the only downside is that there is no fried wan tans =( haha.
She says: Two different types of noodles. My fav is the fat one! That's my order btw! The noodles are okay. It's more to the hard side but still nice. The sauce/gravy is just ok ok to me. Very normal kind of wan tan mee that any other place also have d.

Dumpling Soup - RM0.80 per piece (minimum of 4 pieces)
He says: Gah.. expensiveeee.. Very small and little pieces of prawn and pork inside. But its good =D
She says: I LOVE THESE DUMPLINGS! Got prawn and pork meat inside. What makes it so nice is the mixture of herbs/veges that's part of the filling. Such brilliant idea. And the soup, very tasty! :)

So, in any battle, there must be a winner and a loser, right?

Let's see who likes what!

HIS YAY: The second one =) Ma-ri-yah ma-ri-yah....!

HER YAY: DEFINITELY THE FIRST ONE. The one along Chulia Street! The wan tan mee has more aroma than Maria's. Though I have to say that the dumplings at Maria's are a lot nicer (but expensive ehh)! My all-time-winner would still be Chulia Street's Wan Tan Mee (that's of course until I go find and taste better ones!) For now, *cheers* CHULIA STREET! CHULIA STREET!

AIYO! No winner ehh!

Guess what! We are gonna determine the winner and loser with your help! Very simple! There will be a YELLOW poll box on the right side of this blog. Simply click which wan tan mee you like more and we will see who the winner is.

Is this going to be like the 'battle of the sexes"? Hmm..

So, join us and let's see who will win this battle for the first time? He? She?

We will find out very soon! :)

Famous Hokkien Mee at Lebuh Presgrave, Penang

ONE OF THE MUST-EAT FOOD IF YOU"RE IN PENANG!
Hokkien Mee. Prawn Noodles. Har Mee.

Anywhere in Penang, it is surely that you will see at least one Hokkien Mee stall in every coffeeshop. No kidding! Who can not like Hokkien Mee, like seriouslyy??!

So it's been a while ever since we ever crave for Hokkien Mee. She is usually the bigger fan of hokkien mee, and as for him, a fan also la but not as big.

We were... err.. out.. we can't remember exactly where we went or what we did that night. But it's definitely somewhere in town. Cos we were hungry and she wanted to eat hokkien mee so immediately she knew where to go. He has never been to this place. She also not very sure which street as there's so many street at this area. At first, she said 'Goh Tiau Lor' aka Fifth Street but luckily he made the right turn and we found it without having to ask for direction! Heh.

Lebuh Presgrave or a.k.a. 'Sah Tiau Lor' (which literally means third street).

The extra ingredient that you can add into your hokkien mee., roasted pork belly aka 'siu bak'
He says: Sui bak! Yum yum but fatttt!
She says: Skin, crispy. Meat, soft and tender. It's good, it's good :)

Hokkien Mee with roasted pork belly
He says: The hokkien tastes okay but when its come together with the sui bak, it became ho chiak! I only know two places that sells hokkien mee at night and this one certainly beats the other. =) People, give this a try!
She says: Just like any ordinary hokkien mee you can find in Penang. Love that I have siu bak in my hokkien mee! It made it taste nicer! Who doesn't love roasted prok belly rightt!? It's so a bowl of such awesome goodness!

Hokkien/Lor Mee with roasted pork belly (hokkien mee's soup mix with lor mee's soup)
He says: Aha! This one is good. The combination of the soupy hokkien mee plus the starchy loh mee is just magnificent. Recommended =)
She says: I like this one too! The taste of the soup is different that the previous one, but this is nice in its own way le. The lor gives it a very good aroma. Very good yummy combi. Love itt! Now I know where to hunt for hokkien mee in the middle of the night! :)

The humble stall is placed right in front of a house-like-shop-lots.

Crowded at around 10 plus to 11.
