Jelutong Street Grill Burger, Penang

Hello everyone! We are finally back to updating on our food journey! Back from loads of college assignments, holidays, camps and busy weekends! After all, it is the month of JOY and CELEBRATION! :)

We got hungry after attending a friend's dad's funeral nearby when this stall caught his attention with its bright lights. Just by the roadside as we were driving out of the area. And from the outlook of the whole van set-up, it actually looks pretty good/famous kind. So, being us, we stopped by and decided to give it a try. We ordered one. Just one. And shared. Sharing is caring, people :)

It's called street GRILL burger for a reason.

the menu, ranging from chicken to beef and to mutton.

our chicken burger.
He says:  This stall attracted by my attention from far away! Kinda expected the burger to be very very good but it wasn't. The beef burger was okay but it is salty and the sauce tastes weird.. There's a lot of other choices though. Maybe others will be good =)
She says: YUCKIEST burger I've eaten so far! What makes a burger to be considered 'good' would be (I think) the sauce that accompanies the meat (of course the meat needs to be nice too) and this one is just plain weird and not nice at all. I just taste spicyness and that's all. And in the sauce, they have like big chunks of onions. Can cry ah bite into those big chunky-not-properly-chopped-onions! No more second time for me, for sure.

More More Thai Restaurant at Terengganu Road, Penang

We eat so much Thai food that we can be Thai people legally. No joke. We eat way too much of thai food. If she were to invest in opening up a restaurant, it will definitely 110% be Thai Restaurant! CONFIRM!

Dinner date with his family! In fact, it was his parents whom suggested this place to us. I tell you, spend time with your family and you'll be surprised of certain things that you will find out/learn. It's amazing.

We both love family dinners! First because bonding with family is what matters most in both our lives. Two because we get to order more choices of food and no need struggle to finish the food. Thirs is because we don't have to pay (at least not yet) :)

We both have never heard/seen about this place, at all. It's almost like the whole Penang Island, any corner got Thai Food, we both sure know ehh. Well, sort of. Such thai food stalker we are. Anyways, time for some comments on the mummum.

Tomyam Seafood a.k.a Tomyam Talel - RM35
He says: Sawadeekap! This tomyam, good + good! Its more to 'lemak' type of tomyam but you can also taste the sourness and spiciness at the same time. =D
She says: Thumbs up! It's sour and spicy at the balanced ratio. Also, one thing I really like about this soup is that it's quite creamy/milky/smooth. Very pleasant feeling while drinking this one.

Green Curry Chicken a.k.a Kan Koy Wan - RM15
He says: My mum's favourite! haha. Smells great but the taste is just so so.  It's my mum's favourite though!
She says: Chicken meat is not hard and that's a good sign. The curry is nice. I wouldn't say extraordinary great and different. But it is towards the nice and will-order-again-perhaps!

Prawn Cake a.k.a Tot Man Kun (6 pieces) - RM24
He says: My favourite! Garing tau! Recommended! =D
She says: This is very yummy! Very crunchy on the outside and pretty soft on the inside. It almost tasted like fish balls in donuts' form. I prefer eating this on its own than to eat it with rice! Order this as appetizer! TOTALLY YUMS.

Eggplant (brinjal) with minced pork and bean paste - RM8
He says: Hmmmm.. Not a big fan of brinjals but the sauce tastes quite good.
She says: I'm an ok-ok person with brinjal. Got seasons eh. Sometimes I like it and other times, I just won't bother having it. The way they cook it with minced pork and bean paste somehow makes it really appetizing. Yeah, APPETIZING is the perfect word to describe it. I bet for those who doesn't eat eggplant, after you try this dish, you might just fall in love with it :))

Otak-Otak a.k.a Hor Muk - RM15
He says: Otak-otak! The taste of the santan in the  is really strong but its not bad. Quite pricey though..
She says: Pretty normal to me. I still think that otak-otak is overpriced in every Thai restaurant. I mean, it's like so small and so pricey for its size. And its a dish where you eat one mouthful and you have to go back for more!

Steamed Fish Thai Style - RM40
He says: YOU GOTTA TRY THIS. It's amazing, really. Its spicy and soury to the perfection!
She says: The BOMB of the night. I can really go speechless with this one. The sauce/soup/gravy is mindblowing! It's sooooo good. So good that as I'm commenting on it, my saliva literally feels gathered in my throat. AHH! And the fish is pretty huge, so I would say that RM40 for this dish is totally worth it! TOTALLLY! Oh, and it's really spicy! LIKE REALLY REALLY SPICY! No kidding!

Nasi Beratur at Kapitan Keling, Penang

Midnight makan always somehow happens around mamak or nasi kandar. I have no idea why. I mean, sure there are people who will eat at Green House or some other coffeeshops that open till the wee hours. But in the end, Penang people will still settle for nasi kandar or roti canai. SOMEHOW!

And this time, she wasn't gonna just go to any mamak/nasi kandar place to eat. She had already planned one day earlier to go for the ever-famous nasi beratur since she will be out till so late d. For him, he had already gone there like so many times since he's such a night person.

That's 79 years of business yo!

The extended under canopy area. Pretty cool.

How Nasi Beratur got its name.

The many varieties of curry and dish for you to choose. If you're a clean freak, don't think you'll feel comfortable eating here.

Our main course.
He says: The chicken meat in the picture above is super hard. So, grandparents, you better stay away from that. Haha! But this place serves really good nasi kandar. The 'kuah'/gravy is simply awesome.  Even the rats and cockroaches risk their lives to get a bite of it. =p I recommend you people to try the beef meat, and the ayam ros. Also, some say that the squid eggs is a must!
She says: Fried chicken is definitely not the best. But the gravy is powerr! I never actually expect that the curry would be so nice. I mean, that kinda explains why there are so many people in the midnight onwards and people actually will BERATUR for it. But partly also cos the man who serves is freaking slow. He takes like forever to scoop the rice onto the plate. Haha. I will definitely go back there again and again. Go Nasi Beratur!!

Battle of TWO Wan Tan Mee Stalls in Penang.

We never really would regard ourselves as Wan Tan Mee lovers. Not that we hate it or dislike it but I think we never really go crazy over this hawker food. Not till recently.

This post is specially created like that because we went to two different place in the span of few days. Both also we ate in the midnight, I think. So, here it goes. Our Wan Tan Mee story.

First place we went: Wan Tan Mee at Chulia Street, Penang

Mr Tam Chiak making his order.

It was drizzling that night, hence the lady's fashionable 'pink hat' :)

Wan Tan Mee (used to be called 'Tok Tok Mee in the olden days) - RM2.80
He says: Quite different from other wan tan mees. The noodle is just right! However, the lady gave me a unpleasant look when I ordered the food. Boo sama lu! Bad service..
She says: I wasn't that hungry the night we ate this. So, that's why we only ordered one plate of it. I could smell it even before the pinkhatlady puts it down onto our table. The noodles, not too hard and not too soft. I think what makes this wan tan mee taste so good (and apparently famous too) is the black sauce/gravy that makes or breaks the whole dish. In conclusion ah, I LOVE THIS ONE! :)

Wan Tan Soup - RM3.00 (9 pieces of mini wantons)
He says: Normal la..
She says: I like the wantons. Very soft and meaty and juicy. Soup, is pretty okay. Nothing extraordinary le.

Second place we went: Maria's Wan Tan Mee at Burmah Road

Grumpy aunty is grumpy heh.

Wan Tan Mee (thin/fat noodles) - RM3.00
He says: I like this one! The noodles are soft and the gravy is just nice. =) the only downside is that there is no fried wan tans =( haha.
She says: Two different types of noodles. My fav is the fat one! That's my order btw! The noodles are okay. It's more to the hard side but still nice. The sauce/gravy is just ok ok to me. Very normal kind of wan tan mee that any other place also have d.

Dumpling Soup - RM0.80 per piece (minimum of 4 pieces)
He says: Gah.. expensiveeee.. Very small and little pieces of prawn and pork inside. But its good =D
She says: I LOVE THESE DUMPLINGS! Got prawn and pork meat inside. What makes it so nice is the mixture of herbs/veges that's part of the filling. Such brilliant idea. And the soup, very tasty! :)

So, in any battle, there must be a winner and a loser, right?

Let's see who likes what!

HIS YAY: The second one =) Ma-ri-yah ma-ri-yah....!

HER YAY: DEFINITELY THE FIRST ONE. The one along Chulia Street! The wan tan mee has more aroma than Maria's. Though I have to say that the dumplings at Maria's are a lot nicer (but expensive ehh)! My all-time-winner would still be Chulia Street's Wan Tan Mee (that's of course until I go find and taste better ones!) For now, *cheers* CHULIA STREET! CHULIA STREET!

AIYO! No winner ehh!

Guess what! We are gonna determine the winner and loser with your help! Very simple! There will be a YELLOW poll box on the right side of this blog. Simply click which wan tan mee you like more and we will see who the winner is.

Is this going to be like the 'battle of the sexes"? Hmm..

So, join us and let's see who will win this battle for the first time? He? She?

We will find out very soon! :)

Famous Hokkien Mee at Lebuh Presgrave, Penang

ONE OF THE MUST-EAT FOOD IF YOU"RE IN PENANG!
Hokkien Mee. Prawn Noodles. Har Mee.

Anywhere in Penang, it is surely that you will see at least one Hokkien Mee stall in every coffeeshop. No kidding! Who can not like Hokkien Mee, like seriouslyy??!

So it's been a while ever since we ever crave for Hokkien Mee. She is usually the bigger fan of hokkien mee, and as for him, a fan also la but not as big.

We were... err.. out.. we can't remember exactly where we went or what we did that night. But it's definitely somewhere in town. Cos we were hungry and she wanted to eat hokkien mee so immediately she knew where to go. He has never been to this place. She also not very sure which street as there's so many street at this area. At first, she said 'Goh Tiau Lor' aka Fifth Street but luckily he made the right turn and we found it without having to ask for direction! Heh.

Lebuh Presgrave or a.k.a. 'Sah Tiau Lor' (which literally means third street).

The extra ingredient that you can add into your hokkien mee., roasted pork belly aka 'siu bak'
He says: Sui bak! Yum yum but fatttt!
She says: Skin, crispy. Meat, soft and tender. It's good, it's good :)

Hokkien Mee with roasted pork belly
He says: The hokkien tastes okay but when its come together with the sui bak, it became ho chiak! I only know two places that sells hokkien mee at night and this one certainly beats the other. =) People, give this a try!
She says: Just like any ordinary hokkien mee you can find in Penang. Love that I have siu bak in my hokkien mee! It made it taste nicer! Who doesn't love roasted prok belly rightt!? It's so a bowl of such awesome goodness!

Hokkien/Lor Mee with roasted pork belly (hokkien mee's soup mix with lor mee's soup)
He says: Aha! This one is good. The combination of the soupy hokkien mee plus the starchy loh mee is just magnificent. Recommended =)
She says: I like this one too! The taste of the soup is different that the previous one, but this is nice in its own way le. The lor gives it a very good aroma. Very good yummy combi. Love itt! Now I know where to hunt for hokkien mee in the middle of the night! :)

The humble stall is placed right in front of a house-like-shop-lots.

Crowded at around 10 plus to 11.

Old Trafford Burger at Chulia Street, Penang

That particular moment right after dinner when she craves for burger. And it's not McD's burger. Life is a lot nicer if it's McD since McD is like everywhere and you can order delivery.

When craving comes, you gotta satisfy it, you know. Life's too short not to do that. Heh.

So, he thought of a place after picking her up from the house. Old Trafford's Burger he said. Famous he said. Such crazy MU fan she said.

So here it goes. The burger stalls that all Manchester United fans should at least give it a try. They are opened until 4 o'clock in the morning, so you can go makan after football matches! See whether you all really true fans or not. Haha. Of course it's not like people are gonna judge you if you said you haven't give it a try! *eyes wide open* If like that, all the MU-inspired-shops sure will do well, considering the MANY fans they have out there! :) oh btw, in case you do not know already that he is one HUGE fan of the red devils. HUGE I tell you. We can have endless hours of conversations on this club, right from how and when the club started (sometimes, i really listen to entertain him and give him a bit face la since he's so into it! Haha)

Okay okay. Speak no more. time to find out who loves it and who doesn't!

Menu. Burger ada, hot dogs pun ada. Oblong also they have. Just name it what you want and it shall be given, with a price tag. Also, they serve french fires at your request. RM1.00 to add.

Must be one really hugeee fan of the red devils.

Burger Special Chicken - RM4.50
He says: Old Trafford burger? mestilah try! This one is good! but not that great though.. The mixture of the sauces tastes a bit weird =S Like how the tomatoes are cut into small pieces though =)
She says: That's his bite! So big heh his mouth! Kidding!! Okay, the burger bun is soft and huge. And can actually taste the butter on it, which makes the bun really yummy. The patti is surprisingly soft I like how he slices the meat patti into half and then lay the cheese in the middle of the meat. That way, it really melts. The sauce is not overwhelming. It's just right. I like this one! :)

Eddy's Chicken Rice at Lorong Susu, Penang

Chicken rice here. Chicken rice there. Chicken rice everywhere.

Another sure-eat-everytime-we-don't-know-what-else-to-eat!

He has been eating this one since he was a lil boy. His mom brought him there. So, he was very convincing as usual towards the chicken rice here and he always said it's the best d and all. She ate here a few times with him and both have different opinions! :)

Chilli sauce - very important 'side dish' to any chicken rice meal.
He says: Sourrrrr.. but its good, its good..
She says: Thumbs up! :)

Chai Buih (Soup with salted vege and lots of i-have-no-idea-what!)
He says: Chai Buiiihh! and its freee unlike other places! Haha. It's quite sour though but I like it!
She says: Yes, it's free. but it SUCKS! Not nice at all. It's too sour and there's no chai bueh taste really! It's not a good soup. No idea why he so crazy and love this soup so much!

Chicken + Duck - RM5
He says: My mum brought me to this place for the first time back when I was 15 and since then its one of my favourite chicken rice! I just love the way the boss simply chop the chicken! Make the chicken taste better somehow! =D Try the duck rice too.. Request the boss to deep fry the duck for you first!
She says: The sauce that's covering the rice is spoon-licking good. Serious, no kidding. The chicken meat, okok only. Duck meat, not that bad. What I really love about this dish is the black sauce with rice and duck meat is the winenr for me.

Roast Pork (char siew) + Pork Belly (sio bak) - RM5

He says: The char siew is simply amazingg! You know what you can do? Admire the colour of the char siew when it is left hanging on the shop. "Looks" tasty and shiny! It is sweeeet and soft. The char siew comes with a sweet sauce too! The pork belly is just okay for me though..
She says: Love the char siew! Sio bak okay only. Nothing great.

Gusto Cafe at Tanjung Bungah Hillside, Penang

Wanna know what exactly do the Westerners eat in their far far away land?

You don't have to travel far to try it.

JUST GO GUSTO CAFE!

So, one Saturday noon, we decided to lunch there with a couple of our friends. Time for some bonding you see. Actually, a few of other friends ate there before and mentioned in Instagram that this is a must try, so we decided to go check it outt! :) (and yea, we know the owner/founder of this cafe)

Menu on the board (written by the co-author himself) :)

She was curious how this would taste like.
He says: Hmmm.. Tastes like ginger ale?
She says: Ginger is the least of my like-to-eat-things, but I just had to try this out. It looks nice and it  was nice. LOVING IT. Only RM2.00!

Cafe Latte/Flat White - RM6.00
He says: Like and love this.. You gotta try this cafe latte peeps! Smells really good. Try adding on double espresso shot if you wanna feel more awake =D
She says: Me no likey coffee. Sorry, don't know what to say also. It tasted.. bitter? (that's usually how coffee is like what)

Pulled Pork (served with wedges and potato salad) - RM15
He says: Pork burger!?! The last time I tasted a pork burger was the samurai burger from Hatyai! This one is  not the same as that though. The meat is simply softtt after being cooked in a slow cooker for 14-18 hours.. However, I think Gusto can add more taste into this though.. Maybe with the meat a bit burned.. The salad is okayyy...
She says: It's crazy how soft and tender the pork meat is. It's cooked in a slow cooker for many many hours and I didn't even have to chew much! For those who wears braces and just have them tightened, you can still enjoy! Just order this burger! Oh, and the bun that they serve with is wholemeal type. AHH! Goodness add with more goodness! Oh, and their potato salad, GENIUS!

Double Happiness Burger (a.k.a. Heart Attack!) - RM15
He says: THIS IS DA ONE! You people gotta try this like ASAP. The beef was juicy, the cheese was supple and the bacon was fulah! what a great combo.. Plus, it comes with healthy buns and wedges. REALLY, YOU GOTTA TASTE THIS YOURSELF =D
She says: Double the beef patties and double the bacon? And the cheese is not those ordinary sandwich slice cheese. It's those like really gooey and yummy! I LOVE THIS BURGER! I have to say that this is the best beef burger I have eaten so far in Penang! And it's so cheap!! :) *drools*

Cheese Steak Sandwich - RM15
He says: Cheesy and yummy! This one is alright for me =)
She says: Quite like this one. Yummy beef withthe yummy melted cheese. THUMBS UP! :)

Their SPECIAL homemade sauce.
He says: This homemade sauce is specially done by the boss himself. Try this with the wedges =)
She says: Who needs sauce when the burget itself is already so nice, right? Haha. Anyways, I like this one. Nothing extraordinary as I'm not really the sauce-type-of-person but you have to try it! :)
