Famous Thai Food at Annathai-Kitchen Restaurant at Pulau Tikus, Penang

Dinner time with a few friends. Okay, not a few actually. I think it was like 10 of us or something.

As usual, we always struggle to decide where to eat, especially when you go in such a big group. So, her sister and brother in law suggested this Thai Restaurant at Pulau Tikus.

Almost immediately we both agreed and kee chiew! Hahaha.

You can either sit inside or outside of the house-converted-into-a-restaurant.

Our two guest judge for Annathai-Kitchen :)

Tomyam Kung
He says: Pretty good.. You can taste the richness of the spices/ingredient. Mixture of sweetness, sourness and spiciness.

She says: Nice. It's not too sour, not too thick or thin. Love this tomyam!

Rachel: I love it! Spicy and sour!

Kahwei: The soup taste great but needed more ingredient for it to be included into my list of favourites.

Signature Fish
He says: Normal fried fish only.

She says: Deep fried fish.. Hmm.. Normal le. The mango kerabu however is yummy.

Rachel says: Normal deep fried fish with kerabu and another type of sauce. nothing to shout about.

Kah Wei says: Fish is not my "type of food". Look interesting though for having 2 type of sauces to your own liking

Phat Phak Liang - RM10 (small) / RM15 (big)
stir-fry vege (liang) with egg
He says: Just okay. Really.

She says: It definitely tasted better than it looks. It's quite a yummy dish. The vege somehow is quite special. One plate for me not enough. Hah.

Rachel says: Love this dish! The main reason I will go back to the shop! The fragrance of the eggs and vege is simply superb, with white rice..ooh la la! Oh..and the vege is not found here. Only found in Phuket apparently.

Kah Wei says: This dish is one of my favourites which lures me back to Annathai. Never fail i order the big size one with 2 person meal. No regrets!

Yum Khai Yao Ma - RM10 (small) / RM15 (big)
Century egg salad
He says: Highlight of the day! I think this dish is a must try here! My first time trying this and it is really really good!

She says: The sauce of this dish is superb. I don't love it that much but I don't hate it also. Quite neutral with this one.

Rachel says: Aanother must-haves for me! The combination of the century egg (imported from thai) and the onions, cili padi..NICE!

Kah Wei says: I usually don't long for century egg but this is a total different league of food taste and texture. This dish is a MUST and goes well as appetiser as well as part of your dish.

Kar Moo Tord - RM15 (small) / RM25 (medium) / RM40 (big)
pork knuckle
He says: The pork knuckle is good. The amount of meat and the 'bak eu' is just right. Nice!

She says: Teated pretty bland to me. Didn't really enjoyed this dish. Sauce also like not much taste.

Rachel says: Not a fan of deep fried knuckle. Too oily for me. Sauce is oily as well.

Kah Wei says: Pork knuckle i only target for it's fats. Taste is good as well but didn't fit into my top 2 dish.

Thai dessert with coconut milk and water chesnut (Tub Thim Krob)
He says: Rich, u can actually smell the santan from a distance. Jkjk.. This one is quite good..

She says: Quite a yummy dessert. The santan is not too diluted or thick. Just ngam ngam.

Rachel says: Okay. Not bad. Wish to have more nangka though.

Kah Wei says: I'm not a sweet tooth person. So no comments.

Cheng Hwa Seafood Porridge at Jalan Atas, Nibong Tebal

ROADTRIP TO NIBONG TEBAL!

If you see some of our previous posts (here, here and here), you would know that we really make sure we make it to full use of our makan-makan there. Small town, but so many good food to eat! We of course ended our night there with the ever famous crab porridge!

We did not go to the usual restaurant that is famous for crab porridge, Chang Kee. This time, we decided to try out the new place. We saw a few times when we were there that this restaurant was filled with people. Even got people stand and wait. So we thought it must be either really good or really cheap!

Let's see what was the result.

Cold and sweet Octopus (Japanese style) - RM10
He says: Cold. Its like going to Sushi King for the takos!
She says: The lady who mentioned this to us DID NOT say it was going to be a cold sweet dish. In fact, we were all expecting the usual steamed ones. I didn't like this dish.

Vegetable with pork floss (bak hu) - RM6
He says: Normal dish...
She says: So normal.

Seafood Tomyam Maggi Soup (1 person) - RM7
He says: Pretty good.. more of a sweet and sour kind of tomyam..
She says: Normal tomyam. Seafood tomyam, but I only have prawns and fishballs. I don't like this tomyam. Not spicy enough. Very normal.

Steamed Clam (sour) - RM12
He says: Kinda like the sauce! I would say the best dish of the night.
She says: A bit sweet and a bit sour. I can safely say this is a dish that we were smiling while having it. Clams are all open and pretty fresh. No sand or mud. Quite nice.

Crab Porridge (1.02kg of crab) - RM66
He says: Normal. Nothing special..
She says: This is a huge letdown! The soup has no crab taste at all. The rice were soft. they were okay. Overall, as a crab porridge dish, it failed big time. At least for me. Two thumbs down for this one.

Famous Hokkien Ta and Wan Tan Mee at Jalan Atas, Nibong Tebal

Yay! More Nibong Tebal foood! Click here and here to find out more makan-makan at Nibong Tebal.

When I say Hokkien Mee, everyone knows what that is right?

I hope you all know, especially if you're a Malaysian! If not, SHAME ON YOU! Kidding kidding.

So yeah, hokkien mee is a popular dish in Penang, loved by many.

BUT how many of you know what Hokkien Ta is?

Hokkien Ta is the dry version of hokkien mee. Soupless Hokkien Mee. A bit difficult to let it sink in, ins't it?

Hokkien Mee is actually eaten mainly for its soup. So, if the soup not nice, it's a bad hokkien mee. So hokkien ta how?

Easy peasy.

The chilli they use to mix with the noodles and ingredients will determine whether it's a good hokkien ta or not. Actually, we have not known of anywhere else that serves Hokkien Ta other than in Nibong Tebal. Seriously.. So, if you go to Nibong Tebal, just stop here for a good 15 minutes and try out their Hokkien Ta.

This stall is at the same place with the Ice Blended Peanut and Laksa! Just click here to see and you'll know what I mean!

Sure got crowd everytime.

They also sells Wan Tan Mee and Koay Teow Th'ng.

The Hokkien Ta is served with yellow noodles. If you want, you can also request to have them served with wan tan mee's noodles.

See that big pot of chilli over there? It's not that spicy actually. It's just nice nice.

Hokkien Ta (Soupless Hokkien Mee)
He says: Super good thing! Must try. Dry version of hokkien mee.
She says: Very unique. Everytime I go Nibong Tebal, for sure I will order this one. FOR SURE. I like it better if its with wan tan mee's noodles.

Wan Tan Mee (dry)
He says: Its okie.. I would say this dish has its one unique taste. Different of normal wan tan mee but its just alright..
She says: Noodles not too soft and not too hard. very springy and nice. Sauce is quite sweet and tasty. Quite a good dish.

Kedai Makanan Dan Minuman Tick Kee at Lorong Siong, Nibong Tebal

Welcome to the post that you will thank us for at the end of it (we hope!)

Many people struggle with finding what's good to eat when they travel to Nibong Tebal for like a day's trip. Well, we have for you a few places that you really have gotta try! We have blogged about this at Nibong Tebal.

This place is very hidden. We would like to think that only locals who live there would know of this place. In fact, we were introduced to this place by a friend who lives there for many years. If it's not for him, we will never know of this hidden coffeeshop that sells pork/seafood noodles.

Nibong Tebal is really a very small town, very close to Parit Buntar. If you've been there once or twice, you'll be able to recognize the roads and it's not that difficult at all to travel in the area of Nibong Tebal. You can actually park your car somewhere and walk around, though there's not much things to see or do there, other than eat, catching octopus and see fireflies at night.

This time, we brought a group of our friends there. Some kinda likes it, some just okay with it, and us, WE LOVE IT!

Kedai Makanan dan Minuman Tick Kee.
Somehow, most restaurants and coffeeshops at Nibong Tebal always ends with Kee behind. No idea why.

Fresh raw ingredients for you to choose.

Place your order here.

One of the reasons why we like this place so much is this *points photo below*
The chilli. The locals here mix the chilli with the soup so it becomes like hokkien mee kind but it's not and does not taste like hokkien mee. Some other people usually just dip their food into it and mam mam.
He says: Yummy. Spicy enough =)
She says: Very special kind-of chilli. It's spicy, a little bit sweet and it's very fragrantful. I don't know if there's such word, but yeah. Very ons! :)

Pork noodles - RM4
(price depending on your chosen ingredients)
He says: Really like this one. The soup taste really good.
She says: Soup is sweet. Pork meat/meatballs all very tender, not overcooked. The soup can be very addictive I tell you. SUPER LOVE IT!

He says: Muahhh,.. really ada ohhhmm.. i would say eat half of the bowl then put the chilli in.. So you get to try both! =D
She says: I can't actually decide which one i like most. With chilli in the soup or without. BOTH ALSO GOOD. Everytime I have this, I sure need tissue for all my "cendols"! Love it!

Famous Ice Blended Peanut and Laksa at Jalan Atas, Nibong Tebal

It was a hot day. A very very hot day. The sun shines really bright and all we wanted was to jump into a pool of iced water. Haha. Okay, not iced water lah, but a pool of water to cool ourselves down.

BUT!

What better way to cool yourself down than a glass of the ever-famous ice blended peanut?!?! And a bowl of laksa! And we're at Nibong Tebal!!! Come onn! This is a muct try here!

A lot of people do not really know what to do when they are in Nibong Tebal. So, that's why we're here to tell you. Not what to do actually. More like what to eat here, in Nibong Tebal. Hence, we are called whatTWOeathere! :D

You know there's this thing about laksa that the best time to have them is during teatime. I don't know about most of you out there, but for the both of us, we do not usually order laksa for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Not even supper. It's only teatime. Please tell us if you feel the same way! :)

So yeah, laksa and ice blended drinks for teatime at Nibong Tebal.

They are sold by one family.  When you walk into the nameless coffeeshop, you'll see two similar stalls that sell laksa and ais kacang. This time we tried the on the left.

Laksa
He says: Malay style of laksa when compared to Penang's. Pretty good though..
She says: The crunchy thing on top is yummy. The soup is very different to the normal ones that we have in Penang. Quite nice.

Ice Blended Peanut - RM1.50
He says: One of my ice blended! The taste is so think and rich. Too much might make you 'jelak' though..
She says: LOVE THIS ONE! It's very rich. You have got to share this with another buddy. Too much of it, you sure get very jelak. A MUST TRY! They also have like ice blended red bean, fresh orange etc.

Restoran Ang Hoay Loh at Jalan Perak, Penang

This place is widely known by people who lives in Penang. Actually, those outstation people also somehow knows about this place. It goes way back for this restaurant.

Needless to say, many of the older generations love to eat at this place. The original shop was not located at where it is currently.

So, it was her grandma's 74th on many many many Saturdays ago!

Take a guess where she wanted to have for birthday lunch?

YOU'VE GUESSED IT RIGHT! :)

ANG HOAY LOH CHINESE RESTAURANT!

We've eaten at this place many times, whether together or separately when we were both growing up. So, it's not a new thing to us at all. In fact, we knew what to order because we 've been dining at Ang Hoay Loh like forever or something.

This time, there were total of 10 persons and we shall review on it now.

Follow us please :)

Chef in their little kitchen.

Oh Chien (fried oyster omelette) - RM40
He says: Thumbs up for this! Its like eating gold though -.-
She says: It's alright. Quite a standard fried oyster. Nothing special, really.

Stir-Fried Tau Kua (beancurd) with Suan Na (leeks) - RM16
He says: The beancurd is soft and tasty but the prawns that come along it does not taste fresh.
She says: One of their signature dish. The gravy very yummy. The beancurd is soft and it taste so yummy when you eat it with the leeks!

Oyster Noodle
He says: ) Haha. OHHH mee! Awesome ;)
She says: ANothe rmush-have there! The last time we went there, it was really good. This time, however, not so nice. There is no consistency in the dishes here lo.

Fried Tang Hoon (glass noodles) - RM
He says: Could be better but it is not bad. Maybe it is a bit too 'watery'..
She says: This is quite nice. I like it because it's not like those dry kind of fried tang hoon. It's wet kind of dish. Very yummy.

Bak Kee Soup (for 10 persons) - RM
He says: Not a big fan of this. Just okay for me.
She says: This one for sure we will order everytime. FOR SURE! The meat is coated with cornstarch and has a very smooth-almost-chewy kind of feeling. If you have ever tried it, you should. Then, you can judge whether you like it or not. This time, the meat was rather tasteless. Again, the consistency is not there.

Stir-fry Chai Tah
He says: 'Garing' enough! =) a bit too salty though.
She says: A normal stir-fry.
